Hecht House is established.
1889
Originally the Hebrew Industrial School for Girls and founded by Lina Hecht, it is located initially on Hanover Street. The institution soon evolves into a non-sectarian settlement house. It moves to its own building on Baldwin Place in 1899, incorporates on February 7, 1922, as the Hecht House, and moves to 17 Allen Street, 80 Charles Street, and then 22 Bowdoin Street in 1922. The organization moves to the former Home for Jewish Children at 160 American Legion Highway on January 19, 1936. It merges with the Young Men’s Hebrew Association of Boston and becomes the YMHA-Hecht House in 1959. The building in Dorchester is sold to the Lena Park Housing Development Corporation on December 22, 1970.
